STUDENTS FROM YONKERS AND YORTOWN WIN FIRST PLACE PRIZES IN 2010 BICYCLE SAFETY POSTER CONTEST

Other winners are from Chappaqua and Armonk

Students from Yonkers and Yorktown schools nabbed the first place prizes in the 2010 Bicycle Safety Poster Contest, beating out over 250 other submissions. Other winning students are from Chappaqua and Armonk.

The awards will be presented on Friday, April 30, 4 p.m. at Westchester County’s Michaelian Office Building, 148 Martine Avenue in White Plains, as a kick off event for opening day of Bicycle Sundays on May 2.

The poster contest was sponsored by Westchester County Parks and the county’s Department of Public Works, Traffic Safety Section. The students received awards for their posters that best demonstrated an awareness of bicycle safety rules of the road.

The first place winners are from elementary schools in Yorktown and Yonkers. The third grade winner is Reese Andrews of Brookside Elementary School in Yorktown, fourth grade winner is Joseph Pllumaj of Casimir Pulaski School in Yonkers and the fifth grade winner is Mayda Pena of Robert C. Dodson School in Yonkers. The students’ artwork best exemplified the themes: “Always wear a helmet when riding your bike - it’s the law,” and “Choose a safe place to ride your bicycle.”  All winning posters will be featured on the county’s website.

The 2010 Bicycle Safety Poster Contest was open to all Westchester students in third through fifth grades. Judges from the Westchester Bicycle Safety Advocates Committee chose the winning posters from entries submitted from all over the county.

The posters were judged on their originality, message depicting bicycle safety awareness, as well as the artwork. The award recipients will receive prizes donated by local vendors and certificates of merit.

In addition to their prizes, all winners will receive helmets donated by a number of entities including, Westchester Cycle Center, Greenburgh Police Department, Danny’s Cycles of Scarsdale and Bicycle World of Mt. Kisco. The first place winners will receive bicycles courtesy of Danny’s Cycles, Pelham Bicycle Center and Walmart of White Plains. Second place winners will receive scooters, courtesy of Danny’s Cycles, Hickory & Tweed of Armonk and Sears of White Plains.
